Descendants of Capt. Arthur Fenner

Henry Eugene Fenner

[b 26 Mar. 1868 at Griswold, New London, CT; d 1 May 1905 at Spencer, Worcester, MA] Henry Eugene Fenner m Julia Elizabeth McKernin [b 2 June 1874 at Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada; d 22 July 1940 at Worcester, MA], daughter of Charles McKernin and Catherine McDonnell, on 28 June 1890 in Monson, Hampden, MA. Julia had lived in New Hampshire before moving to Monson, MA with her parents. Henry Eugene was a boot maker for the Prouty Shoe Company in Spencer, Massachusetts, and had a farm on Charlton Road. Henry died of pneumonia, and he had also been ill with tuberculosis. After Henry’s death, the shoe plant shut down so everyone could attend the funeral, which was held at Keith Memorial Chapel.

The six children were placed in an orphanage until Julia m 2nd Arthur W. Hamilton [b ca. 1886 in Canada; d 14 May 1911 at Worcester, MA], son of William F. Hamilton and Henrietta Higgins, on 26 June 1907 at Spencer, MA. She m 3rd Herman Everett Reuter [b 4 Jan. 1882 at Ogdensburg, NY], son of Edward Reuter and Annie Smith, on 10 June 1911 at Worcester, MA. They apparently separated before Herman registered for the draft in 1918. In 1920, Julia was listed as married but living on her own with Harry, Edward, and Essek in Worcester. In 1930, Herman was living in Boston, married to Carrie. Julia m 4th Herbert S. Prentiss [1878–1936], a minister, on 28 Aug. 1927 at Royalston, Worcester, MA. He had been previously married to Grace M. Holmes [1884–1924] and had three living daughters, Edith, Evelyn, and Mabel. This marriage was evidently short-lived, as Julia was living with Essek in 1930 in Worcester, and again in 1940 when the census was counted on April 6, but she kept the Prentiss name.

At the time of Julia’s death, her last surviving brother Edward was living in Brooklyn. One of Julia’s grandchildren, Duffy McGinnis, once said, “She was a great lady—a strict person—she tolerated no nonsense but she always kept a bowl of cookies in the center of her dining room table for us. When her sons were grown men she still insisted they say ‘yes maam’ and ‘no maam’ and they obeyed her without question.”
