Descendants of Capt. Arthur Fenner

Albert W. Fenner

[b 30 Sept. 1838 at Providence, RI; d 22 Nov. 1906 at Middleville, Herkimer Co., NY] Albert W. Fenner m Matilda Sandford [b ca. 1841 at CT; d 28 June 1890] on 24 Nov. 1864 at Smithfield, Providence, RI, daughter of William and Mary Sandford. Albert’s pharmacy was described by historian Welcome Greene in 1886:

Few drug stores in Providence have occupied the same location for as great a number of consecutive years as has the prescription pharmacy of which Mr. Albert Fenner is the proprietor, at No. 365 High Street. He started business at this stand in the year 1861, where it has been steadily and quietly increasing ever since. Mr. Fenner has taken special pains to build up a large prescription trade, and compounds many medicines that other apothecaries could not readily produce, because he keeps a greater variety of drugs and chemicals, especially botanical drugs. Mr. Fenner is becoming widely known to druggists generally as a manufacturing pharmacist, supplying a high class of pharmaceutical specialties that are constantly prescribed by physicians; and the great demand that has lately arisen for these products has compelled him to greatly enlarge his facilities in this direction.

Albert’s brother James Madison Fenner Jr. also operated a pharmacy in Providence, as did his cousin Alexander Wilson Fenner Jr. When Albert died, his son Albert Jr. continued the business.
