James Madison Fenner

[b 13 Mar. 1815 at Providence, RI; d 17 June 1875] James Madison Fenner was named after President James Madison, who was in office 1809–1817. At age 9, James’s father died, and his mother opted put the children under the guardianship of William Pitcher Olney. Around 1832 in Providence, he m 1st Sarah A. Brown [b Aug. 1815; d 20 Nov. 1864], daughter of Gould and Mary Brown of North Kingstown, RI. From 1836 to 1844 he was a jeweler. In 1844, they lived at 121 High Street in Providence. After Sarah’s death, he m 2nd Louise Arnold [b 22 June 1832 in MA; d 17 June 1909; bur. Putnam, CT] on 21 Jan. 1868 at Providence, RI.

  2. Hector [b 27 Aug. 1834 at Providence, RI; d 1 Sept. 1836 at Providence, RI].

  3. Mary F. [b 2 June 1835 at Providence, RI; d 6 Aug. 1836 at Providence, RI].

  4. Albert W. [b 30 Sept. 1838 at Providence, RI; d 22 Nov. 1906 at Middleville, Herkimer Co., NY]

  5. Earl [b 20 Apr. 1841 at Providence, RI; d 28 Sept. 1901 at Providence, RI] m Julia A. Johnson on 12 June 1870. He served in the Civil War, first enrolling on 25 Aug. 1861 in Battery C, First Rhode Island Light Artillery, but was discharged for medical reasons on 9 Dec. 1861. After recovering, he reenlisted in Battery H on 24 Sept. 1862 and served until 28 June 1865. He later wrote The History of Battery H (1894). For some time he worked for his brother James, who operated a pharmacy.

  7. James Madison Jr. [b Jan. 1849 at Providence, RI; d 3 Mar. 1915], pharmacist, m Sophia O. Livermore [b Dec. 1852 in RI; d 23 June 1927] on 1 May 1872.
