Spear Fenner
[b 22 Sept. 1917 at Enfield, NC; d 31 Dec. 1969] Spear was named after his mother’s father, Spear Dickens. He enlisted for WWII on 29 June 1942 at Fort Bragg, NC. He earned a rifle certification and his specialty was serving as a truck driver. Before leaving for France, he m Mamie Battle [b 6 Aug. 1924; d 1 Apr. 2008], daughter of Aaron and Lizzie Battle, on 5 Mar. 1943 at Enfield, NC; she was roughly three months pregnant with a small child at home. Spear shipped out on 2 Apr. 1943, and their son Spear Jr. was born the following November. While in Europe he saw action in Southern France and Rhineland. He earned a medal for good conduct and other service ribbons. He was discharged from service on 28 Nov. 1945.
Mamie was a resident of Richmond, VA, at her death in 2008, but was buried in Enfield, NC.
