Prudence Fenner

[b 26 Mar. 1799 at Hopkinton, Washington, RI; d 5 Sept. 1895 at Grantsville, Tooele, UT] Prudence Lucinda[?] Fenner m 1st Benjamin Aldrich Kinyon [b 4 Dec. 1795 at Hopkinton, RI; d 14 Nov. 1823 at Milford, Butler, OH], son of Benjamin Kinyon (or Kenyon) and Sarah Worden, 5 Oct. 1816 at the Seventh Day Baptist Church in Hopkinton, RI. They were part of the early westward migration of Mormons. They had two children. Their marriage ended with Benjamin’s death in Ohio in 1823.

Prudence m 2nd Joshua Fairchild Jr. [b 16 Jan. 1797 in Canada; d 15 Jan. 1891 at Basin, Cassia, Idaho], a minister, son of Joshua Fairchild [1771–1854] and Elizabeth Cooley Olmstead. Joshua had m 1st Clarinda Gleason in Illinois and had Harvey in 1823, but his wife abandoned the marriage. Joshua and Prudence married in Dec. 1829 in Madison County, Ohio,[?] and had Elizabeth. They moved to Missouri ca. 1832–1833 and had Alma and Moroni, then to Nauvoo, Hancock, IL, ca. 1839. They evidently separated shortly after moving to Nauvoo. Prudence was counted in the 1840 census at Quincy, Adams, IL, with three children.

Joshua Fairchild Jr. m 3rd Mary Ann Buckham [b 11 June 1808 in England; d 23 Apr. 1898 at Darlington, WI] ca. 1839. Joshua and Mary were living at Galena, IL in 1850, then Platteville, Grant, WI in 1860. Joshua was living at Elk Point, Union, SD in 1870, leaving most of his family behind in WI, including ex-wife Mary and children. In 1870, Mary was living in Darlington, WI with Mary and Phoebe. In 1880, Joshua was living with his 4th wife, Hannah J. Fairchild [b ca. 1812 in NY] in Elk Point; Mary was living by herself in Darlington, WI.

Prudence m 3rd Stephen Markham [b 9 Feb. 1800 at Avon, Ontario, NY; d 10 Mar. 1878 at Spanish Fork, UT] on 30 Jan. 1846 at Nauvoo, Hancock, IL, as a plural marriage. This marriage lasted only a short time, and Prudence dropped the Markham name, going back to being known as Fairchild. She and the children eventually followed west in the 6th company in 1852, under Capt. David Wood, and settled in Grantsville, Tooele, UT. She died there in 1895.

Stephen had m 1st Hannah Hogaboom [b 1 Apr. 1804 in VT; d 31 Jan. 1892], who was with him during the settlements at MO and IL; she left him after 1850, taking her sons to CA to join the gold rush. Stephen also m Mary Lucy Curtis [b 1832 in MI; d 1900 in UT] in 1846 in IL. He added wife Lydia (of MA or ME) by 1860; he was married to Mary, Lydia, and Eliza (of IN) in 1870.

  2. Farnum Freeman Wilford Kinyon [b 3 Mar. 1818 at Hopkinton, RI; d Jan. 1850 in NV] m Lucinda Swarthout. Members of the Latter-Day Saints. They lived in Nauvoo, IL from 1839 to 1846 and had three children there (William, George, John) before heading west, having a fourth on the way. Farnham was counted in the 1840 U.S. Census in Quincy, Adams, IL. After Farnum’s death, Lucinda moved with her family to California where she m 2nd James M. Coburn.

Child of Joshua and Clarinda:

  1. Harvey H. Fairchild [b 7 Apr. 1823 at Vermont Twp, Fulton, IL; d 11 Jan 1885 at Grand Ledge, Eaton, MI] resided from 1839 to 1846 in Nauvoo, Hancock, IL as member of the Latter-Day Saints. Harvey m Henrietta [b ca. 1834 in OH]. In 1870, Harvey, his wife, and five children were living with his father Joshua in Elk Point, Union, SD.

Children of Joshua and Prudence:

  1. Elizabeth Kinyon Fairchild [b 28 Mar. 1832 at Marion, OH; d 26 June 1910 at Grantsville, Tooele, UT]. Elizabeth lived from 1839 to 1846 in Nauvoo, Hancock, IL. She m 1st Brigham Young [1801–1877] on 3 Oct. 1844 at age 12. She m 2nd James Evans Lyman ca. 1847 at St. Joseph, Buchanan, MO. She m 3rd Joseph McMurray [1832–1865] on 16 Aug. 1853. She m 4th William Lowery Chastain [1836–1911] ca. 1865. She m (?) James Mathews. Member of the Latter-Day Saints. She was buried with the name Elizabeth Fairchild Chastain.

  2. Alma Fenner Fairchild [b 7 Apr. 1833 at Liberty, Clay, MO; d 5 Apr. 1891 at Eureka, Juan, UT]. Alma lived from 1839 to 1846 in Nauvoo, Hancock, IL. He moved to UT in 1852 and m Susan Elizabeth Bailey [1836–1911] in 1854 in Eureka, UT. He was registered with the UT militia in 1866 at Grantsville, UT. Member of the Latter-Day Saints.

  3. Moroni Fenner Fairchild [b 19 Sept. 1835 at Independence, Jackson, MO; d 28 Aug. 1909 at Basin, Cassia, ID] Moroni lived from 1839 to 1846 in Nauvoo, Hancock, IL. He moved to UT in 1852 and m Harriet Lucinda McMurray [1840–1917] on 18 Jan. 1855 at Grantsville, Tooele, UT. Member of the Latter-Day Saints.

  1. Anne E. Fairchild [b ca. 1839].

  2. Clarinda Fairchild [b ca. 1842 in IL].

  3. Isaac Fairchild [b 1844 in IL]. In 1910, Isaac was working as a gold miner in Goldfield, Esmeralda, NV.

  4. Lucy Jane Fairchild [b 8 June 1847 in IL] m Charles Emory Morris [1837–1904]. Lucy and Emory were living in Elk Point, SD in 1870, with Lucy’s brother Shiloh part of the household.

  5. Rebecca Fairchild [b ca. 1848 in IL].

  6. Mary Fairchild [b 1850 at Galena, IL] m Peter Van Hook on 1 May 1878 in White Oak Springs, Lafayette, WI.

  7. Rachel Fairchild [b ca. 1852 in WI].

  8. Phoebe Fairchild [b 1853 in WI; d 11 Aug 1936 at Monroe, Green County, WI], unmarried.

  9. Shiloh Benjamin Fairchild [b 29 Jul 1855 in WI; d 7 May 1940 at Hughes County, SD] In 1870, Shiloh was living with his sister Lucy and her husband in Elk Point, SD. He m 1st Emma M. Lemont on 18 Jul 1878 at Wiota, Lafayette, WI; they were counted there in the 1880 census. Shiloh m 2nd Mabel Grace Wayne; his children with her were born in South Dakota.
