John was a sailor, serving as a cabin boy at age 12 or 13, then by 25 became a captain. Abigail’s father died when she was 16; her brother Samuel sold the farm at some point and moved to Woodstock, CT, where he married Emily Russell, taking his mother Ruth with him. Abigail’s husband probably continued to sail for a few years after their marriage, but it appears as though Abigail and John moved to Woodstock to be near her mother, then eventually settled on a farm in Pennsylvania.
